All five babies in the bassinets were White.

My husband took one look and shouted, “They’re not my children!” Then he walked out of the hospital and never came back.

Five newborns slept beneath the warm lights of the neonatal intensive-care unit. I was still trembling after major surgery when Richard stepped away as though his own children were something shameful.

“Richard,” I whispered. “Don’t do this.”



His mother, Victoria, stood behind him in a tailored suit and perfect pearls.

“My son is a Sterling,” she said. “He will not raise another man’s children.”

“They are your grandchildren.”

Richard gave a cold laugh.

“I should have listened when people warned me about you.”

Victoria moved closer to my bed.

“You will sign the separation papers. No claim on Richard, no claim on the Sterling estate, and no scandal. We’ll say you became unstable after giving birth.”

I looked at my five babies.

Their skin tone and features were unlike both mine and Richard’s, but I had seen the genetic results months earlier.

I knew about the rare inheritance from my estranged father’s side of the family.

I knew exactly whose children they were.

Richard tore off the hospital bracelet marked FATHER and threw it into the trash.

“I’m leaving. If you come after my money, I’ll destroy you.”

He walked away without giving a single child one final look.

Victoria paused at the door.

“You should be grateful. We’re giving you the opportunity to disappear.”

Then the door closed.

I gently touched my firstborn daughter’s cheek.

“My loves,” I whispered, “your father just made the greatest mistake of his privileged life.”

Because before I carried the Sterling name, I had been a senior corporate contracts attorney.

And I had read every line of our prenuptial agreement.

Especially the clause concerning a parent who voluntarily abandoned his biological children…
